Great Migration
Serengeti National Park is Tanzania's largest and best-known park. Its name comes from a Maasai word meaning endless plains, and the park supports some of the highest densities of lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants and other wildlife in Africa.
The Serengeti is the centre of the Great Migration, in which around two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle follow the rains in a continuous circle. Calving season in the south, from January to March, is followed by the Western Corridor crossings and then the Mara River crossings in the north. Resident game is excellent all year, particularly around Seronera in the central Serengeti.
The park offers game drives, hot air balloon flights, walking safaris with a ranger and night drives in selected areas, with options that range from simple camps to luxury lodges.
June to October is the dry season with excellent game viewing, and the Mara River crossings in the north peak from July to September. January to March is calving season in the southern plains. The long rains in April and May bring fewer visitors.
