Watamu

Watamu is a relaxed coastal town on Kenya's north coast, set around sheltered bays, white sand and coral reefs. The Watamu Marine National Park protects the reefs, which suit snorkelling, diving and glass-bottom boat trips, and sea turtles nest on the beaches.

Inland, the Gede Ruins are the remains of a 13th-century Swahili town set in forest, and Arabuko-Sokoke Forest shelters rare birds and small mammals. Mida Creek is good for birdwatching and mangrove boardwalks.

Watamu is reached by road from Mombasa or by air to nearby Malindi, and is a good beach stay for travellers who want a quieter coast than Diani.
